Review on πŸͺ‘ Enhanced Office Chair Gas Lift Cylinder Pneumatic Shock - 5" Travel - S6111 by Renee Warren

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Fits my September 2000 Aeron chair.

My Aeron chair from the thrift store went out of shock a few months ago. Slowly lower yourself to the end of travel. I bought this on a dice roll to see if I can fix it. It took a whopping 20-30 minutes to get the shock a perfect fit despite having very different tapers on either end of the shock. A few tips: 1) Of course, watch the yootoob video. Hit a harbor weight (plastic filled with sand) with a hammer to remove the old shock absorber from the base. That was the hardest part. The video shows that the bases come off very easily, but they don't. It takes a lot of effort and a lot of repetitions to free the base. Rotating the base seems to have helped when I hit the old shock. 3) I used a large pair of rounded TIGHT vices on top of the shock to force it out of the saddle. Knocking with a dead hammer helped. I couldn't get enough leverage without a hammer, and it's likely hitting it helps break things faster. 4) This is the BIG part of the CASE: having a 4mm floating hex wrench to adjust the elevation arm. The reset button on this shock is much larger and taller than the Herman Miller, so you must back off the hex set screw in the top recline cover under the seat or it will be at maximum height when nobody is busy and at minimum height while sitting. To access this, remove the top cover under the bottom of the seat and move the height adjuster to see which lever you need to adjust. The case is fairly easy to remove with a couple of screwdrivers and a careful but persuasive look. Loosen the set screw until the seat lowers when you sit on it. 5) To insert the shock after assembly, crouch down a few times so that everything stays in place when you lift the chair. Longevity remains to be seen, but the damper is a definite improvement over the faulty one it replaced.
