I bought this paddle to replace the one that came with my inflatable SUP. This original paddle looked like this, but the connection between the top third of the paddle and the middle third was one of those threaded compression assemblies that actually broke while I was on the water in the Florida Keys. This paddle seems to have a much sturdier construction - it's a variable tension lever lock - and it works great. I've used it on two fishing trips, both in the Louisiana swamps. It's a tough paddle in these conditions - the water is salty, there are oysters, pilings and some rockfalls to dodge and you're doing a fair amount of poles and pushes instead of rowing straight. I also use it for breaking, which means its blade gets stuck in the mud as the wind and waves move the board, and I saw no reason to worry about this tension causing it to break or become damaged. It was a pleasure to row - it seemed light and stiff. One thing I would like to mention is that I found it easier to row the rudder in the "wrong" direction (i.e. tilt the blade backwards instead of forward). Holding the "right" SUP felt like I had a bit of flapping in the blade. But it's neither here nor there - the handle easily folds down so you can hold the paddle however you like. Replacement, I will buy that.
