The plastic sleeve around the metal spool is VERY soft and flexible and that's the problem. If something larger than the diameter of the hose clogs the hard plastic connector during cleaning, suction will "pull" the hose up to a short, compressed length, quickly pulling the cleaner toward the operator. Works well as long as you stay away from large objects.
