My daughter is 8 years old and is very thin but of average height. She usually wears 7/8 shirts. She doesn't usually like turtlenecks (she worries they might feel too tight around her neck), but the neck on this one was fine - it was tight around her head but not at all around her neck. lots of fabric around the neck (in terms of folding) and/or tight around the neck, but it doesn't. In fact, it probably could have been a little "higher" at the neck (although there's enough fabric to fold it up), but I was glad it wasn't too tight. Otherwise she would feel uncomfortable. The length of the arm in the 8th size fit her. The overall length of the shirt fitted her (when she raises her arms, the skin is not visible). We needed a white turtleneck to dress up in her cheerleading uniform. This worked great! Very happy with the landing. However, if your child is of average weight/thickness, it will likely fit them better in the upper body. When your kid grows up I think this will still work. If your child has a little extra flesh (which is perfectly normal.
