Insufficient filter area for 5 gallon tank

Filter elements are easy to clean but due to limited surface area they only last a decent amount of time (over a week) at very low fill densities. Even with a moderate population density, the filter must be cleaned every other day. Not recommended for anything larger than 5 gallons, and much less if using a moderate population density.
