It is definitely necessary to protect your prop from thieves.
Works great with my 2002 Mercury 125 SW outboard. I bought a new SS prop and am keeping my boat dry docked so I wanted to make sure the shiny new prop didn't grow a leg and get stuck on someone else's outboard. Highly recommended!
