Waaay Too Quiet!: Aquarium Pumps and Filters

About five years ago I bought another pump from Revain. This was the best pump I have ever bought. This allowed me to forget that the pump was running all the time. Unfortunately, due to our very hard (actual EPA rating) water or time, it began to work sporadically, costing me two of my mature (6+ inch) tropes. I've forgotten it's different, but in my experience, sharks tolerate anything but still or insufficiently agitated water. I suspect their resemblance to sharks goes beyond their physical appearance. I returned to Revain for a replacement knowing I could find a much better range than any local supplier. I was not disappointed. This pump is very quiet. I attribute this to the fact that this is a DC motor, not AC. I can change the flow This is important because I'm using a homemade sump system and it allows me to choose to push or pull the flow. What I mean is I can get it back to the main tank a little faster than gravity pulls it, and therefore there's a little more water flowing through the system as a whole than a fixed flow system. My system is a freshwater swamp. The main tank is a 72 gallon pre-drilled nose. The sump is a 15 gallon tank with a 10 gallon tank that serves as the physical and biological filter section. This leaves a 5 gallon chemical filtration reservoir that houses the pump and returns the water to the main tank's return port, which is about four feet up and flows through about five feet of 1-inch hoses. No matter how technical I seem, so don't ask me about physics. I'm a craftsman and experimenter who never settles for the status quo or traditional solutions. On my list of projects is building a (different) booth that is more aesthetically in line with my bride's gorgeous decor. The way this pump works makes me crave it even more.
