With some modifications, this device is worth its money.

Like many of us, I took up a new hobby during the pandemic and started learning the art of knife sharpening. I was a line cook for a few years when I was younger and have remained a fairly serious home cook, so knife sharpness is important to me. I also have a habit of salvaging quality knives from thrift stores and donating them after they're repaired. My solution for a quick sharpening is a 10 inch vertical belt sander consisting of 150-3000 grit belts and then finishing with a polishing paste and leather belt, but the belt play combined with the need to sharpen the corner freehand gives good results... but not much inconsistent results. I wanted more precise angle control but didn't want to invest too much in a tool that might or might not help me take it to the next level. At under $30, I thought it was a reasonable entry-level value. Delivery (in the States) took less than 48 hours after ordering. that the owner forgot that this is a little delicate, put things on it and things that are damaged, so I will most likely either leave the kit - bag and everything - in the shipping box, or (more likely) take for all this a hard plastic case, such as a plastic tool box. The block itself is generally well assembled. It looks more complicated than it really is. My ease of assembly test: whether I can put something together without instructions, by first just looking at a picture of the finished product, which I did in this case. The device is made of relatively good metal, but some of the fine-thread screws and their mounting pins are a bit rough and jam/jam a bit. A few tips: do yourself a favor and grab the large ball pivot pin detent and swap it for the upper slider arm backgauge (they have the same threads). You want the angle of the stone hand to be a lot smaller than the travel of your finger will allow, and if you're swapping them out you can use the included Allen wrench instead, which works a lot better. Also, the ball joint may need some adjustment as it tends to stick a bit. Highly recommend: mineral oil or 3-in-11, ball joint and rocker arm sliders for smoother movement. I still have a lot to learn about sharpening with this device, but there are plenty of good videos (even for this very device) online to help dial in the process. For the price and with multiple settings, I think this is a solid entry point into the world of more precise knife sharpening.
