Review on πŸ“± Logitech Harmony 1100 Universal Remote: Color Touch Screen, Discontinued by Manufacturer by Doug Daniels

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Works as advertised, slightly overpriced for performance

This is my second Logitech unified processor. The 1100 replaces the 5 or 6 year old 520 which has started to get unpredictable. In any case, I have mixed feelings about the 1100. First the good: 1) everything works as it should, devices turn on, all commands are recognized. Depending on the complexity of your HT setup, you may have to spend a little time fiddling with delays and power on order, but this isn't unique to the 1100.2) The rechargeable batteries (LiIon) and stand are a really nice feature, so you must don't have to keep changing batteries and always know where the remote control is. 3) The LCD touchscreen is an improvement over the outdated 520 feel, of course you can change any soft key to your liking, but the standard keys will probably suffice for most. 4) The backlight is bright enough for a darkened multimedia room. Now for the bad: 1) When migrating from the 520, I was hoping/expecting that I would just click "remote upgrade" in the Logitech software. on my laptop and it would detect the new remote and flash it with all my devices, delays, power on commands etc. Not so! I actually had to sign up for a NEW account and ENTER all my devices and lags from scratch. That's what Logitech should do, after all, I'm demonstrating brand loyalty here. 2) The LCD screen, while good, is about two generations behind what current devices are using (e.g. the iPhone4 panel). For a $200+ device I was expecting something sharper with a better viewing angle. Is that a deal breaker? Of course not, it's just value for money 3) No Bluetooth control (PS3, Wii) without additional receiver. There are workarounds, of course, and it's not a big deal if you're playing games to take the gamepad to turn on the console, but for the price you'll want this implemented in the unit. Some people use their PS3 as a Blu-ray player, so they might not want to mess around with the gamepad.

Pros
  • Stable test results
Cons
  • sad packaging
