I like to have cheap memory cards on hand. Back up important things and check the safe. They are small, cheap and easy to transport. Simply stick a label with the file's date range on the case and your important files are well protected. I usually overlap (backing up a year's files every 6 months) just in case one card fails. At 8 GB, you can fit many tax returns, Word documents, spreadsheets and your best family photos. If you're collecting data, you might need a bigger map to fit everything, but hey, that's your problem.
