Green litter comparison - not my favorite of the bunch

Background: I've had cat friends all my life - I grew up with cats and I remember having clay litter and how *expletive* it smelled horrible - Absolutely never mention the pain they have to deal with. I mean they had clump skills but that's all they had. Over time, companies developed new fillers and technologies, and I was one of the early supporters of the Breeze Litter System. I have a cat who (before we got him) had crystal blockage and was taken to the vet and almost died. The Breeze Litter system (which separates the poo from the urine - the urine goes into the pee pad and there are poo balls on it) was fantastic as it allowed me to control if and how much he actually peed. It was fine for years and I felt like I didn't need it anymore; Also, the pads had to be changed every few days, which was pretty wasteful. All packaging was plastic. So my quest for the perfect kitty litter began (again) – this time to be sustainable and effective. Note: I have two cats and only one large litter box. COMPARE: Yesterday's Purina News (4.7/5). This was the first eco-friendly filler I tried, and spoiler alert, I finally came back to this after trying all the others below. It's easy to buy online (Revain or Chewy) or in stores (PetsMart, Petco, local stores). I buy the unscented version because (a) if the scent is artificial I don't want it around my cats, and (b) if it's essential oil based I don't want it around my cats either, because they might not be dealing with EO. This is the only reason I am deducting part of a star because if you are not careful to remove the pellets from the urine it can smell. It doesn't stick either. When I'm at my best and scooping daily (better if you can do it twice a day), there's no odor issue. This is a granular litter (about 1 inch long?) that I prefer. He does not pursue, although some are thrown off the tray. The feces appear to mix (the color of the granules is dark grey/brown/black), and the urine turns the granules into loose dust. It falls to the bottom of the tray and it's easy to see what needs to be scooped up. I have found that the best way to use this litter is to completely replace it every 4-5 days (throw the box away!) and scoop it out daily. I love that the pellets are made from recycled newspaper (nothing new needs to be created) and packaged in a 100% recyclable paper bag. One bag lasts me about 2-2.5 weeks. The world's best cat litter - Multi-Cat, Red Bag (2.5/5). I read so many great things about WB and wanted to try it because of the rave reviews and the fact that it was slippery. I have to say it clumps nicely and covers odors like a champ. Here the pluses end. During the day, this debris was tracked throughout my apartment - from the sofa (light grey) to the bed (dark blue). My cat's paws were yellow. Because it's more like particulate matter, it got everywhere (and didn't really feel "dust-free"). It was a nightmare to keep up and I ended up giving it away. It's also not very affordable and comes in a plastic bag. That's when I realized I would have preferred a granular filler, so I didn't even try the other great walnut, corn, and pine fillers. If I had to pick second place, it would be him. It's designed for use in horse stalls, but don't let that stop you because that means it's being sold at a very low price because it's not being sold for cats. I think a 40 pound bag costs less than $7. These pine pellets smell so good and really mask the smell of poop and urine. One bag lasted me about 2 weeks. The reason it wasn't my favorite was that it was in a plastic bag and understandably as the pellets are made from pine wood they turn into incredibly fine dust which then leaves a mark. It wasn't as serious as WB, but still annoying enough not to buy it again. I think if you have a large area (I live in an 800 square meter apartment) and change them every 3-4 days, then this is not a problem. Paper filler Okocat (2/5). This pen just didn't work for me. They claim to be pellets and I think technically they are, but they are microscopic pellets and pale in comparison to pine pellets or YN pellets. I like big pellets because at least when they're thrown out of the shell they're easy to see and sweep up. They were small enough to track down and get stuck in my cat's paws, and small enough that I stepped on them often and found them everywhere. Precipitation wasn't left, but still. The box also came to me partially open (shipped by Revain) and it smelled TERRIBLE. Not sure if I had a bad batch or if this is always the case, but the smell was like vomit and never went away. It also didn't cover up the smell of urine. Doesn't crumple, in general I don't recommend it. I love Okocat's environmental awareness and that it comes in a recyclable box. I hope these comparisons have been helpful. Please let me know if there are any questions! I'll update this review if I ever try another eco-friendly brand, but for now I'm sticking with Yesterday's News because it's affordable, easy to find, lasts a decent time, doesn't flake or smell. , and environmentally friendly around.
