Upgrade from DS1517+. Super easy update. Much faster. More memory. The rest is the same assembly and quality. The default RAM is too small. Suggested unofficial upgrades for the budget conscious (note Synology has officially supported hardware if that matters to you): - 32GB RAM - may have a compatibility warning depending on manufacturer, can ship for <$200 total with no compatibility warning. Google "DS1821+ and/or DS1621+ ECC Ram Upgrade Options" to see a list of RAM with or without warnings. 10GBE NIC - see Mellanox ConnectX-3 MCX311A-XCAT LOW PROFILE, Plug and Play, $45. a word of caution about the NVME cache: most users don't need it (including me - I don't use it!). Ordinary home users working with virtual machines can win. If you really want it, only choose official Synology nvme or Optane cards for cache. Consumer NVMe cards WILL cause data loss if they inevitably and prematurely die (Search). DSM7 will improve the NVME cache, but I don't recommend using it until a stable version is released later this year.
