The waterfall creates very good water movement for the size of the pump. It's sucked in from a few tiny but unobtrusive holes around the base that blend really well. Having multiple large inlets like this is good for two reasons; This allows water to be drawn in from multiple directions at once to reduce water flow "dead spots" around the filter, and also because if you're like me you have a turtle removing mosses and rocks can move and only has one or two entrances can easily be blocked.
