This is my first time buying bio balls for the marina so this is a general review of this bio ball model. mm, 225 standard bioballoons equals 1 gallon, you need 300 of them to fill 1 gallon. Regular mini bioballs from China (which cost $1-20 for $1) are 15mm, so these marina bioballs are somewhere between standard and mini bioballs in size. from a bundle of small thin tubes or are full spheres, hollow and with a small sponge inside. They are full spheres but the ribs are all in the same direction and all go in the same direction, I assumed that in the photo they had a sponge base but in general they are not, they have less filtering power than the others three styles, but they are easier for cleaning. While the size and design aren't optimal, it's still a good buy given the price is so low, as long as you have the space, the $1 filter performance is still above average. Mini universal mini bio balls with a sponge in the middle are better BUT clog faster, need cleaning every 6-12 months, they can probably last 2 years without cleaning. PS The box says 90-Count, I have 91. So that's a plus =)
