I was a bit skeptical of the $500 decanter/aerator, to say the least. However, after trying it on a few bottles, I was really impressed. I drink first, I drink a big fat cab, too soon. As a first test, I took a 2010 bottle of Caymus Special Selection from my cellar. I poured a glass straight out of the bottle as a base and the rest into the carafe. I did it according to the instructions and decanted the viola compared to the base glass, the wine was noticeably more aromatic and significantly smoother. This is a great wine that can benefit from years of bottle aging but the decanted version was very enjoyable. My second test was on the 2014 Silver Oak Napa Cab. It's too early to drink this wine so I figured it would be a good test. Same procedure, the base glass then remaining is decanted. Same results. The wine really opened up and became much more drinkable. I'm a believer!
