I live 8 or 9 miles from the main transmission towers here in Houston. Antennaweb.org said I didn't need a very sophisticated antenna, so I ordered one along with the digital network tuner HDHomerun, which allows you to watch TV and record from computers on the network using Windows Media Center built into Windows 7 and Vista. I don't know how sensitive the HDHomerun tuner is, so it might have an impact on the level readings I'm getting. Also, there are a lot of trees around and I have no idea what effect they have. I get a usable signal on about half of the available channels and only a few have a good quality signal. I tried running it indoors, then outdoors, then in the attic. It worked a little better on the road, but none of those variations made a significant difference. I was able to get a strong signal from the local affiliate that was broadcasting the Thanksgiving Lions/Patriots game and the picture was perfect. I think I'll have to go for an outside antenna and maybe an amplifier.
