I found the visual installation video very helpful. The only guidance in the box is on the card for properly aligning the screws. It was a fresh install so I was able to properly weigh the lid before installing. The lid weighed 28 pounds. before painting, so I bought two 13-16 lb hinges (one for each side). Points to note: 1) The hinges are designed to fit the cover at a 90 degree angle (this is shown in the image on the instruction card but there are no specific warnings). If you adjust the hinge more than 90 degrees with the lid open, it will not close properly. Once installed, the hinges easily hold the lid at a 90-degree angle. 2) In the instructions, you must first install the mechanism on the side of the cover. The second step is to connect the end of the articulating arm to the cover. The hinge arm has a little play from left to right, so make sure the arm is straight when you attach it to the lid. I had to move the screws on one of my hinges after warping it a bit. One final note: Depending on what weight range your lid falls in, it will a) not close, b) close very slowly, c) just barely right, or d) not move unless you really push on it. Remember I made this note the day I installed the hinges. I'll update if they don't work.
