It just disables the alarm. The cord isn't long enough to wrap around the edge of the windshield and it simply plugs into the cigarette lighter and lets you reach the silence, not the detector. On my Escort 8500 detector the smart cord can be hardwired, the cable is long enough to wrap around the windshield and allows the detector to sit alongside the rearview mirror with an alarm indicator and mute button on a small module that can be fitted next to it to remain hidden from the steering wheel for true comfort and clean installation. I hope the Whistler CR 90 detector is as good as the reviews, if not I'll go back to Escort.
