When I couldn't find direct comparisons between the original Lightening Dark LEDs and their new Nucleus Pro Lightening Dark LEDs, I decided to make my own. Here are the results. First let me get one thing straight. The original Lightening Dark lights are amazing. I've had the same set on my Subaru for two years with no service and no signs of failure. I trust this brand and know they make a great product. That's why I was so interested when they released the new version. The two lamps are very similar side by side. The original is a bit longer, but the actual part that goes into the headlight housing is almost the same in size and shape. The main difference is that the new Nucleus Pro flashlights have a larger box that fits the cord. I believe it's the CAN bus driver and resistor. This should be taken into account because you need to find something to secure it. I zipped them to the fairing braces. If you look closely you can see the real difference. Look at the photos. The actual light-emitting diodes are about three times larger than on the Nucleus Pro. They are massive. Let me be clear here. The original Lightning Darks are among the brightest on the market. That's easy. Wow. They dazzle in the middle of a bright sunny day. Both lights are very well made. Both are mostly aluminum and neither of them have any obvious flaws. The clean edge finish and attention to detail is great, especially given the complexity of the thermal syncs. The installation is almost identical. But I found the Nucleus Pro to be a bit easier. The plastic collar is a bit thinner so it's still pretty durable. But it's easier to put a clip on it. Both use the same beam adjustment system, which allows the light to rotate inside the collar to change the direction of the light. It's simple, reliable and easy to use. They have the same beam pattern, but the Nucleus Pro illuminates a larger area because the large diode area doesn't hit the deflector. Both light sources generate a lot of heat, so do not use them under any circumstances, the lamps are closed and cannot breathe freely. Now for the most important part, the actual brightness. The originals are very bright and if you are on a budget you can buy them with complete confidence and my highest recommendation. The new ones are noticeably brighter, but so powerful that I fear dazzling oncoming traffic. When you receive these, it is extremely important that your headlights are properly adjusted and adjusted afterwards. However, I highly recommend lining them up, whichever one you choose. All in all I'm really impressed, but let me reiterate one very important thing. The original lamps (Contemporary Nucleus) are excellent LEDs. They are reliable, extremely bright, easy to install and really well made. If power consumption isn't an issue, I'd recommend spending a little more on a Nucleus Pro. I would not retrofit the original headlights. You are still great. This is important, but not enough to justify abandoning a large number of lamps for their use. You can always update if and when someone dies.
