I have a marine aquarium with Ocellaris, Blue Luma and Emerald Crab. These filters operate marginally for 6 weeks without packaging. I have found that adding Pro-Carb Z crystals (activated charcoal to remove ammonia) to the filter makes the water cleaner; aquatic life is more active; the growth of green, red and brown algae is reduced; and the service life is extended. To improve convection for filtering, I also added a more powerful and quieter air pump. I found this useful because the bullet has a reduced surface area for the tank to breathe, which is vital to the tank's health. The emerald crab also contributes to the health of the aquarium by eating algae, leftover food and fish droppings. However, when working with crustaceans, the water must be treated with iodide on a weekly basis, as crustaceans absorb iodine through their tissues. In general, the idea is good, but the implementation is lame. The operator has to perfect the whole process to get good results.
