Review on Edimax WAP1200 - Pro AC1200 Dual-Band Wall-Mount PoE Business Access Point with High Speed 802.11AC Dual-Band by Thong Pilla

Revainrating 5 out of 5

One of my worst access points in a long time

Well I've had a few wireless access points over the years - Ubiquiti, Engenius, Cisco etc - and this Edimax has to have one my least pleasant experiences. I won't go into all the details so I'll try to make this review useful for other people who are thinking about it; Pros: 3x3 dual band radio, 802.3at POE support, integrated NMS. Lots and lots of detailed options to customize. Cons: admin is terrible (takes 20-60 seconds to apply a change and you have to do it after each change), no range management (very few do this and I've heard it's coming), automatic channel selection seems broken too be. My device arrived with the wrong country code (2GHz was advertised as US, 5GHz was advertised as "JO"). Did I mention the terrible admin experience? To be honest I can't comment on NMS - setting up and running an AP as a basic AP was such a long and painful process that I can't bring myself to delve into it. This NMS might be more useful if you want to run multiple of these devices, but I personally could get past the nightmare management. I'm giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because it has potential (i.e. a good hotspot, but unless they fix the admin very few people will maintain it long enough to find out. If you're looking for a quick and easy setup, I would recommend Engenius EAP1750H - get a 'simple button' for every environment and client combination EAP1750H seems to have fewer low-level customizable options compared to Edimax, but again there is less to play with them.

Pros
  • Simple and intuitive Central Network Management (NMS) package
Cons
  • Hard to say
