I live in New England where it's cold and dry in the winter and we have pretty hard water from a city well. Our house is over 2500 square meters. feet and we keep it on the warm side (69 degrees Fahrenheit). I used to swear by my Skuttle 190 drum humidifier because I could see how much moisture it puts out into the air - it could add 5-10% to the humidity level in the house. I also scolded him for the maintenance (pills every month, a new filter twice a season, annual cleaning of all internal parts), but I put up with it because I wanted more humidity. I tore it up last summer and replaced it with a full length Aprilaire 600M. I chose the manual option because my gas oven has a built in hygrostat on the thermostat and can control the humidifier directly. Thing. Just. Is working! I've checked the filter once a month and it doesn't seem to have any significant mineral buildup (just a little at the drain hole) and humidity is maintained as evenly as the Skuttle, maybe a little better. At the end of the season it seems like all I have to do is take out the old filter, maybe wipe a few areas, and that's it. (Plus I saved the cost of a bottle of CLR). If you're thinking of replacing an old appliance that needs regular care and feeding, do it, you won't regret it.
