First, the stated product dimensions (18 x 13.5 x 14.5 inches) are incorrect. I ordered this at the end of October 2012 and asked to return it if the box I received is larger. The device is incredibly small with a very shallow bowl. It's not quite the right shape, though, and it's not small enough to squeeze lumps out of those weird corner dents I mentioned. The shovel is roughly round with some sort of rake (I think that's it) pointing towards the other end. It would take too long to sift through all the trash in the box with this shovel, so I use a regular shovel-shaped shovel instead. The handle is also less than 5 inches long. So if you have normal or large hands trying to use this thing, there's a very good chance your thumb and/or index finger will get stuck in debris. - I don't find the flip top lid useful at all as it doesn't swing far enough from the lid that I can easily reach the back with even a more sane shovel. I take the lid off and set it aside to scoop out of the box. - I think 4 inches is too small for a litter box. Many cats, who prefer to dig holes and bury their droppings, need at least 3 to 4 inches of litter to do what they want.
