Our little 10 gallon aquarium struggled to keep up with the shubunkin goldfish we had as kids. (They can mate with koi, it must have been a glue to me that they are HUGE fish.) I read about it and bought a box. I literally just threw them in the tank, it's not that hard. However, this immediately affected the quality of the water. The water was clear, nitrifying bacteria found a habitat and the water change was halved. Living in a crowded aquarium isn't ideal, but if you ever have to, it will give you time to create the best situation for your fish. I will never put up a tank without him! PS - transfer some balls from the old tank to the new one to speed up the cycle!
