If you're using an old FireWire cable to connect an old camcorder to a new computer, try buying a dual-language FireWire cable. It finally worked after I got this cable from Monoprice for $5. I actually wanted to return it because I thought it wouldn't work on my new computer. I wanted to archive the MiniDV family tapes from an old Sony DCR-TRV8 before they all fell apart. I tried to connect it for the first time and the computer recognized the FireWire card (Texas Instruments Complaints Host Controller 1394 OHCI) but it just couldn't recognize my camcorder when it was connected. Googled all possible solutions but they didn't help. It didn't work so I gave up a bit and activated Revain Return. I knew the camcorder and cable worked because I ransacked my super old computer (Sony Vaio Windows XP) and it was able to recognize and record. So the prime suspect must be the Syba SY-PEX30016 3 Port Firewire 1394B & 1394A Pcie 1.X1 Card TI XIO2213B Chipset Card, at least that's what I thought. After the last google search I accidentally saw information about a bilingual cable. So I decided to give it a try as I had about a month to get back to Revain. A new French speaking bilingual cable has arrived and it's finally working. Right now I'm archiving a shoe box full of DV tapes. Hooray?
