This unit is perfect when you can't mount shelves directly to the wall. Only four panels should be in contact with the wall. Unfortunately, there are no charts showing the actual shelf spacing between the vertical tubes that run through the shelves, so you can't estimate in advance what will fit in your shelf. I had to buy new storage bins to fit the shelves between the tubes (after the shelves arrived) because I didn't get an answer on this before I bought it. So, for anyone who needs to know beforehand, tube spacing is probably 18.5 inches (with maybe 1/8 inch more "headroom").
