Good product but be aware of the design tradeoffs when using the PH1400. Still recommended

It's hard to write a review just for the PSA1000 as it really is an accessory for the PH1400. If you want to read my PH1400 review, you can find it on the PH1400 product page. I have a Black and Decker pole pruner (with extension) because I've moved to an acre with lots of trees but thought pruning should have been light and infrequent. I also had investments in 20V and 40VB&D batteries and gear so that seemed the logical way to go. My experience with EGO equipment started when I bought a lawnmower kit (with battery and charger). I have since bought a blower, PH1400, EP7500 and this item. The cost of batteries is so prohibitive that I use my 5Ah battery almost everywhere. This purchase could change that. So the experience with my Black and Decker pruning saw was far from outstanding. It was light, and while each segment of the carbon fiber bar was rigid, the bar attachment mechanism was terrible, so this thing was articulated at every joint. The design was such that since the motor was in the segment of the saw, only current passed through the bars. The PSA1000 definitely gives a different experience. First, the packaging is much more solid. The product arrived without damage. I was happy to see that the chain was already fitted with the correct tension. The shaft is extruded aluminum with a cast aluminum support. Also included is a bushing for the chain bar. To use I connected this product directly to a PH1400 and also connected to an EP7500 (which was connected to a PH1400). I think I'll start with what I like: 1.) I like chain lube. Not every pole saw has one, but every saw needs proper lubrication. Good news or bad news, the lid has a tether (plastic ring) that keeps the lid in place when you unscrew it (presumably so you don't lose it). This design makes it easy for contaminants to get onto the cap when it's dangling - this isn't good and the device is more likely to get dirty with use. It's not the end of the world, but you must have a rag handy. The oil tank reservoir capacity is excellent 2.) The cutting capacity is large. I would guess that the battery settings affect the run time of the tool and not the cutting power. With a 5Ah battery this tool could be used like any petrol saw I have ever used. for example: 1.) Weight. This is partly my fault, with a 5Ah battery. Indeed, choosing a design that uses the PH1400 as the base for a whole family of tools (trimmers, edgers, pole pruners) makes sense in terms of modularity, but the result is a pole pruner that weighs significantly more, than he should. Placing the motor in a PH1400 instead of a PSA1000 requires additional weight and reduces the efficiency of the mechanical spline drive. Also when used with an EP7500 it would be nice to have the motor weight on the end of the PSA1000. This is my experience, YMMV.2.) The molded stand does not support PSA1000 level when placed on the floor that is not attached to the PH1400. It might sound silly, but it would be handy to fill the oiler without completely reassembling the machine. 3.) The wedge caps are not good and the engagement marks are not good enough. This probably needs some explanation as I'm sure some owners will disagree with me. Given the cost of these products (and batteries in particular) they are not disposable. Caps and stickers are great when you first get the gear, but what about 5 years from now? Lids are what you will receive to protect the item from damage in transit. Due to the changing properties of the material over time, it can easily tear, get lost or simply no longer fit properly. Something more substantial would be nice. The stickers show the point of engagement and the driver for attaching the shaft. Everything is fine, but it's a sticker. It would be better to just etch it on aluminum. Finally, I wish EGO had just made a custom pruning saw. I don't think the PH1400 platform was a good choice for this particular application. Without this option, however, this is a good performance (even with its shortcomings). My EGO reviews tend to sound pretty similar. These are good products if you don't flinch at the cost of the battery. The PSA1000 is no exception. highlighted.
