I use this in my 5.5 saltwater Microreef. The filter basket is wide open and ideal for adding your own filter media. I have Fluvel filter thread and activated carbon. It clears the water quickly when I change the filter and I use the jets to attach a hose directly to the outlet to pump water out of the reservoir for a water change. The cost of the pump is higher than others I've looked at BUT the ability to use your own environment justifies the initial cost as it translates to low lifetime maintenance costs.
