With other shovels, you just use the corner or side where it's not open with the fins and scoop them up. It has slots all over it so you're busy chasing little bits and then they slip through again. So it's a waste of time, which is a shame since you've just saved so much time picking up big lumps. If they just made one edge or even the corner of the scoop a little more malleable (harder) so you could pick up dirt at will, that would be perfect for small wet bits. Another thing to note is that this is not a deep spoon (but it is big and long) and is made of plastic, shallow spoons are better if you don't want to break them. Then, after removing the top layer, dig deeper for deeper "buns". Don't worry, it's faster than it looks. My kids use it vertically and they end up breaking a few lumps and then something sticks to the spoon leaving sticky things on it that need to be scraped off. Pooh. I'm glad I have this shovel, but if it ever breaks or if I get tired of kids using it, I'll probably get the closest metal one that's a little lower down the shovel bowl area for my kids to use can dig deep.
