Picks up dirt on the surface but doesn't really catch and hold dirt between coats as I would expect from the description. So the best way to clean it is to vacuum the collection between layers instead of throwing it away. This keeps the litter from getting on the cat's paws, but not in the way I expected. And if something wet gets on that carpet, it makes a mess. This is because there are multiple layers, so you can't just scrape the surface. You must clean the top, top and bottom of the bag and all openings. My cats don't usually pee outside the box, but it does happen from time to time, or water is spilled or the cat vomits. Made a huge mess every time.
