At the time of writing this I couldn't find a comparison of these two built in preamps anywhere. I was able to run a parallel test with a Trident Fethead and an sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite. TEST EQUIPMENT: Two SHURE SM58 dynamic microphones (both purchased at the same time and in pristine condition) Two 20ft Mogami Gold 2534 XLR cables - Triton Fethead Standard-sE Electronics DM1 Dynamite - Behringer XR18 digital mixer - Reaper 64-bit -DAW for recording and playback -Two functional main ear holes. offers a gain of up to 60 dB. The mic with the fethead was set at 26dB to get my peaks around -9dB when speaking. To match the output signal, the microphone had to be set to 32 dB using the DM1 Dynamite. I've swapped cables and tried different ports on the mixer and always got the same results. The extra gain has increased the noise level somewhat, making the Fethead the clear winner in this regard. Other important differences are size and weight. Fethead is shorter and slightly lighter. The dynamite protruded further from the rear panel and could easily get in the way of mic placement. For me it is much easier to work with Fethead. Both seem solid and well built, but the Dynamite would have been a much more effective projectile. Both have a bit of play when connected to the mic, but the Dynamite seemed a bit weaker. With the added weight and the fact that it continues to perform, Dynamite seemed more of a problem. But we're all really good at protecting our cables...right? Sonically, Fethead seemed more subtle. Dynamite was a little more punchy, but Fethead was cleaner and crisper. The DM1 gave the tone some punch. This might be fine in some applications, but it's not ideal when you're trying to capture the most accurate audio possible. It's more a matter of taste and desired result. With that gear, Fethead is clearly the best choice in my humble opinion. It has a better overall sound and a more manageable size. It even improved my noise level a bit. This is definitely something worth having in your kit. I will buy more fetheads. The 5-star rating is based on value for money and not when compared to a $5,000 preamp. LLAP
