Review on Maxtor L01P100 100GB Internal ATA Hard Drive - 7200 RPM by Raymond Iglesias

Revainrating 5 out of 5

An excellent drive for budget PCs

Some versions of this 100GB drive have an additional 20GB. At the advertised price, this is a very good dollar-to-gigabyte ratio. I added this to a DELL Dimension 8100 and it worked great. Getting either the standard 100 GIG ATA or the one with the additional 20 when using the utilities on the CD with the drive will give you the maximum available space on that drive. The best thing about the CD is that it optimizes registration when needed (on most devices and PCs sold today, anything under 137 GIG is perfectly usable). Your only manual adjustment is the jumper on the back and this is fully documented in the CD booklet. If you want to use the 100 GIG as a new C drive, the best way (if you want to keep the image on the current "C" drive) is to put the drive in the second bay, boot, and then close the system copy (either with the free XXCOPY software available on the web), or with something like DRIVE IMAGE, etc.; I used XXCOPY and made a full boot disk before swapping disks so I could copy system files. A few words about additional software. DO NOT use the Maxtor DDO (Dynamic Disk Overlay) option in the MAXBLAST software if you have Partition Magic 7 or 8 and Norton Utilities Premier 2006. There is a high possibility of a problem with BOOT.INI and the HAL.DLL file. . The good news is that using PFEDIT and then FDISK/MBR (and no, that's not a typo. This switch works and isn't officially documented in the MS Windows TID docs, technical info), which changes the partition type from TYPE 44 is changed to a type you need when you need it, and FDISK/MBR rebuilds the MBR (Master Boot Record). another variant of Maxtor. In any case, if you have an available PCI slot, there are cards available on demand that make adding drives of any type even easier than you might think. Regardless of the size of your system, if you need a backup drive, MAXTOR offers what I consider to be the best external drives since LACIE. I actually love my Lacie External :-). Anything that can survive the transition from a 240 volt system to a 110 volt system and theoretically vice versa, as well as withstand security at LAX (Los Angeles International Airport) where everything is done but your car through the security system to push is a reliable device in my understanding. Opinion. MAXTOR and LACIE. What a team!
