I'm not a smart person. I can do the top of the head and a bit on the sides, but not the back of the head. I'm glad I have someone to help me finish the whole head. One thing about these rods is that you have to be careful how you put them on. If you got them "wrong" the rods won't hold the hair in place. I really liked the curls when I removed the sticks after the perm. However, after washing my hair, many curls disappeared. I suspect it was because homemade perm lotions didn't curl my hair very well. And the two blue poles cannot "turn around". I finally "open" them, but I don't want to risk putting them in my hair and not being able to take them off.
