Biological fill is one of the three fills required for a good filtration system. the other two are mechanical (sponges) and chemical (activated carbon). I usually use living sand as a substrate. So when I circulate the water, good bacteria start to form in the living sand or whatever substrate you are using. I have a fresh water tank that uses ceramic bio rings and it works great. feels and looks like compact living sand which, as mentioned above, makes an excellent substrate. So, I think this should work fine now that I've set up this new aquarium as a bare bottom so good bacteria like the bioball will live on the living sand. my other hanging filter system. It doesn't crumble into small pieces, so it folds up pretty tight. I'll find out how these bio balloons work in combination with the plastic balloons I have in a few months. The update is coming in a few months when my pelvis has a chance to go through its cycle.
