Review on Buffalo Technology AirStation WLA-G54C: 54Mbps Wireless Compact Repeater Bridge-g for Enhanced Connectivity by Dexter Rasberry

Works great but hard to set up and documentation doesn't help much

I needed to network Tivo and Xbox in upstairs bedroom but couldn't run CAT5. So after much research I decided to use the Buffalo WLA-G54C as a wireless bridge to the ground floor Apple Airport Extreme base station. The web configuration tool is pretty bad - there is no obvious way to get more settings. I had to search through the equally bad print documentation to find the URL for the advanced controls. I enabled the WDS bridge mostly through trial and error. The documentation was very poor. Technically, third-party bridging isn't supported, but both the Apple Airport Base Station and the airport use the same Broadcom chipset, and once I got everything set up correctly, it worked like a champ. It's been up and running for a week now and works much better than the previous setup - using the Linksys WUSB11 wireless USB adapter to connect the Tivo to the network. With this adapter, despite the signal strength of 70-80%, daily updates often failed and we could not transfer programs from one Tivo to another - the connection was cut too often. Now we can reliably broadcast programs and listen to MP3 streams. In short, the setup was agonizing, the documents were poor, but the end result - the performance - is excellent.
