I have no experience with oil stones at all. I first met them while watching a video on how to polish aluminum die casting molds and all the foreigners used them to polish metal to a mirror finish. I soaked them in Norton sharpening oil until they were completely soaked on one end. While these stones were a good start, 1000 grit is not enough to achieve a high gloss finish. After watching more videos it looks like I need at least 1500, 3000 and 5000 grains. They are cheap and suitable for teaching anyone just starting out.
