I've been using them occasionally for at least 30 years. Although it looks like a simple mechanical filter, it is enriched with non-toxic substances that keep your aquarium free from harmful chemicals and toxins. If you suspect your aquarium contains heavy metals or other toxins, use it instead of charcoal. The pads also remove copper, antibiotics or other medications after treatment. The pad itself is about 1/2 inch thick so you can easily cut it out with scissors to fit your canister or attachment filter. Lasts long and can be recharged. After about a month, rinse it under tap water (for saltwater aquariums) or in salt water (for freshwater aquariums) to recharge it. When the bar turns dark brown, it can no longer be charged.
