With this box and the flavored filling, I don't smell a stray odor even after the flavored filling wears off! The front flap may seem odd to your cat, but try not to remove it for a few days like I did. Maybe fix it and try to support it with something and gradually lower it until it is normal. This box is truly a game changer and well worth it!
