I'm a pencil lover but wanted to play with charcoal. This set is a good start. You get 2 of the 4 degrees of hardness (hard, medium, soft, extra soft). I used a utility knife and sandpaper to sharpen them - DO NOT stick them in an electric sharpener. A hand sharpener might work, YMMV. I found they needed a bit of learning, but by combing them with pressed blocks of charcoal from the same company, I quickly drew fun, simple shapes and things. I can't tell how they compare. to other charcoal pencils, but they seem fine to me. I also recommend getting an eraser and some not-so-smooth drawing paper with it.
