It's definitely better than doing it by hand - both because you don't tire your hand and because it's easier to get to the right spot without accidentally other places nearby to wipe from moisture. I didn't use any of the other things that came with it, just an electric file and a small brush to clean the sanding head after I was done. You should definitely do this every time you use it, because dead skin dust will collect on its underside instead of just falling out - and probably detach the sander head and clean underneath as well. (4/5 because it seems like if you're not careful bits of dead skin could fall in and then be impossible to pick out.) The instructions say to just press it against your skin for a few seconds . Seconds at a time, then a pause, repeat, etc - and I understand why, I can feel my skin warm up if I hold it in place for too long. Light is useful for checking in between whether you need to do it more or not, but it's useless if you're actually pressing it against your skin. I like the battery percentage display.
