Review on PORTER CABLE 740001501 2 Inch Adhesive Backed Sanding by Matt Hamilton

Terrible on all fronts

I posted this on a granite slab for lapping a hand plane. The adhesive's tack is so strong that to remove it I had to do the following: 1. Use the heat gun on high power while pulling with a gloved hand2. Spray WD40 on rubber glue-like residue and leave for 30 minutes3. Use a razor blade to scrape off the cement4. Use mineral spirits to remove any remaining marks that the razor blade failed to remove5. Use 91% isopropyl alcohol to remove any film and restore a clean and shiny finish. It worked because the razor blade doesn't damage the granite. However, I am very disappointed with how strong the adhesive is. In terms of durability, SunGold PSA stearate sandpaper with aluminum oxide of the same width and length lasted 2-3 times longer for about the same money. I was disappointed again. SunGold isn't perfect as it's still not difficult to separate from granite, but it holds, is inexpensive and leaves no residue when removed. The value for money is pretty low here. When you factor in the cost of blue towels, WD40, mineral spirits, a razor blade, and 91% isopropyl alcohol, that's all it takes for me to clean up after use. The third disappointment and this sandpaper impressed me when lapping hand planes. A solution I came up with was to put blue tape over the granite and then attach sandpaper to the blue tape. That way I can just peel off the blue tape. However, this isn't necessary and again increases the cost of using this sandpaper by eating up my stash of blue duct tape.
