Review on Arrow Fastener PT18G 18-Gauge Nailer by Darrell Beecher

A few stumbling blocks for the newbie

I've never used an air nail gun before. I live in a 108 year old house and the previous owners replaced some of the moldings with plain 2 x 4 boards which look crappy and awful next to the original more elaborate pieces of wood. So I've nailed quite a bit of trim and molding over the years while renovating room by room. I'm a lousy carpenter and I always drive a few nails into the wood at the wrong angle. I've often thought about renting a nail gun, but since the job was done piece by piece, it was never worth the investment. I couldn't turn down the opportunity to try this out in exchange for a review. It arrived in a plain box with no paperwork. For someone with no nail gun experience, the lack of instructions would be impossible. I immediately went to Arrow Fastener's website and since there were no download instructions, I contacted the company directly and requested them. On the plus side they were very responsive and the instruction manual arrived via email within a few hours. On the other hand, the information provided was rather incomplete. It's pretty obvious that they're for those who have used a nail gun before, as they don't even explain how to load nails. Big negative. Big. Also, and this was my own stupidity, I didn't realize I would have to rent a compressor ($25 for 4 hours at Home Depot) to use this thing. But once I got past those hurdles, I found it was really easy to use and allowed me to get my task (hanging a crescent moon around my library's pedestal) done cleanly and in no time. It lies comfortably in the hand and never sticks. After overcoming the beginner stumbling blocks, my verdict is that this is a solid and useful tool that I'm happy to have in my collection. This will come in handy for future projects.

Pros
