Judging by the pictures, the pencils themselves are about 2 inches long and slightly wider than the average pencil. (If it helps anyone) I bought the rear ones as in the photo and when they are in the hair they are not visible. I know they offer them in different colors and thought it might be something like a bobby pin that best matches the hair color but I didn't think it made a difference. So I think the other colors are mostly for aesthetics. Now I want to try them out mainly to see if they give me a headache like traditional bobby pins or hair ties and not that much yet? He only feels a tugging in his hair and very little headache. But I have a headache problem that I take medication for, so not having a painful headache an hour after my hair was pulled up is great! Maybe for the first time in years I can wear buns without much pain.
