Review on Surge Guard 35550 Hardwire Model - 50 Amp: The Ultimate Power Protection Solution by Will Ridpath

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Did not work properly with 20 amp 120 volt current.

First, let me admit that I am not a professional electrician. However, I am ASE certified in Automotive Electrical and Electronic Systems and have an above average understanding of voltage, current, resistance and electricity. I installed a surge protector on my 5th wheel at home which has a dedicated 30 amp outlet and everything seemed to work fine. 2 days later I went on a 2-week road trip with my 5th bike and easily connected 50 amps of electricity again. When I got home at 10pm and didn't want to maneuver the trailer around behind the house, I plugged my adapter, which comes straight out of a 15/20 amp outlet (regular household outlet), into the trailer, the lights on the guard Filter did not light up. I have checked the cord, adapter and trailer wiring down to the surge protector, everything is fine and the surge protector is getting power. At this point I was tired and didn't want to empty the fridge, so I unplugged the surge protector and reconnected the power to the original switch (standard wiring configuration). Everything worked and I went to bed. The next day I started checking everything and found that there was continuity between the neutral tip and L1 (black wire). I spoke to Steve at TRC and he agreed this was wrong. I ordered a replacement from Revain. When the new one arrived I tested it without even trying to install it and found the same problem. Didn't install it and sent it back. I will continue to use the original at my own risk. I will say that it works fine at 30 and 50 amps, but at 15 or 20 amps it's doubtful. I'm not sure what's going on in these things, but I guess it's about something that shouldn't be. See attached picture with no network connection, the device has never been used.
