This sharpener deserves all five stars. I thought they were joking or paying fake reviews. You are not. I've never seen anything so sharpened, not even the cool heavy duty sharpeners from the 70's! The dots were razor sharp. You can kill someone with that. I'm not joking. For this reason, and also because sharpening until the sharpener stops grinding (like the other instructions suggest) eats up a HUGE amount of pencil, I usually only give the sharpener 4-5 turns, then stop and check the tip. In most cases, 5 will do, depending on how blunt the pencil was to begin with. Like I said, you don't need a clamp. Someone on Revain gave a great review with instructions (it doesn't get that silly). It may have been on the side for the green version of this sharpener. I'll give you my own quick tips. 1. Pull the metal shield away from the sharpener until it snaps into place.2. Squeeze the two black pins at the top and hold them while inserting the pin.3. Insert the pencil until it stops.4. Keep one hand on the sharpener while turning the handle with the other. The sharpener pulls the pencil back as it sharpens and you can hear/feel when the pencil is "done" (ie it's now a wooden stake that can kill any vampire at that depth)6. If you don't want a vampire killing pencil stub, stop after 4-5 and check the tip by squeezing the black pins again and pulling out the pencil. If after 4-5 turns the tip still needs further sharpening, carefully reinsert it and make another turn or two until satisfied.7. Remove the pin again by squeezing the black pins and pulling the pin out.8. If the bezel is still sticking out, turn the knob and it will retract9. Empty the drawer with acrylic shavings, or the world's finest pencil shavings will fall out of the cracks and scatter throughout the room, no matter how careful you are. Put it where your kids can't pick it up and throw it to each other because I'm pretty sure someone will go to the hospital if it hits someone in the head. 11. Hide vampire killing pencils from younger children or children/people who cannot be trusted to place bets. PS It's fun to use. Too funny. I want to sharpen everything in the house. Just like my children. They aren't allowed to use it because they bet every pencil in the house and I don't buy new crayons every week. Let your kids use this at their own risk. Jokes aside, I love this pencil sharpener. It's so silly to get excited about a pencil sharpener, but when was the last time you bought something post 1980 that did a really good job and looked like it would last more than a month? I bought it with great concern because of the price, but the reviews convinced me it was worth it. I don't regret spending 25β¬ on it. Although - oh - that's a lot. It's worth it and better than constantly losing cheap $2 hand sharpeners or paying $12 (still a lot) and taking a break. ETA: No vampires were harmed in the handling of this product. I tried, but the very sharp pencils were too short. Okay, maybe they hurt themselves a little. But those were just physical wounds. UPDATE 6/26/16: Wow. The thing is a tank. Of course my husband allowed all the kids to use it because apparently he wants them to stab each other with deadly pencils. Luckily they didn't. They also learned that if they sharpened their pencils too hard, their pencils would disappear and run out too quickly, so they learned to stick to the 4-5 turn rule. In the meantime, this pencil sharpener has been subjected to some severe abuse. Small rubber bumpers on the legs are long gone, and the bottom is badly scratched. Sometimes the bezel wants to pull back before I put the pins in (no big deal, I just pull them back out) and they bent one of the black pins on top a bit. Despite the abuse of this sharpener, as well as heavy use (my kids love to draw sooooo much), it still works. I have no doubt that no other pencil sharpener would have withstood such a test. And surprisingly, the plastic box didn't get lost or broken. She's holding up pretty well there considering nothing is holding her. I still love this sharpener and my only problem right now is finding a small sharpener to take with me when I'm not at home. This thing ruins you.
