Pulled out the factory 1GB DIMM, replaced one of them and added another to the 'open' slot on the motherboard. I passed the memory test and booted straight away - I recognized all 4GB. The key here is "1Rx8" or peer modules. This NAS will not work with the much more common 2Rx8 or dual rank modules. Has been running for a few weeks now with no problems. That's about as much RAM as you can run in these devices, and for $10 I have nothing to complain about.
