Review on ๐Ÿชš Woodraphic Dovetail Saw Guide Jig Marker: Magnetic, Upgraded Version (1:8 for Hard Wood) by Nick Granner

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Simple and worthy.

I rarely write reviews, but it's worth giving this little tool five stars. Although I know how to cut dovetails, it's been a long time. In my first experience (cutting a walnut), a Japanese dozuki (dovetail saw) was used and the joints were marked by hand. It has a lot of gaps and not so straight saw lines. On the plywood scraps I used Woodraphic to mark the seams and guide the Ryoba (Japanese non-ribbed handsaw) to make the cuts. Works exactly as advertised. If you make sure that the jig is snug against the workpiece, the saw lines will be perfectly straight and repeat at an angle. I suppose I could build something similar using wood, a magnet, and slippery tape, but it's pretty easy to make a quick attempt at manually carving and cutting through dovetails with this tool (see attached photos of joining in plywood). While the "hand cut" look can be reproduced to some degree on a machine, this jig made the process by hand quite quick and easy. Rarely are tools so effective immediately!

Pros
  • Sturdy design
Cons
  • Some bugs
