My overpriced kitchenaid dishwasher's lower arm stopped spinning after 3 years and I discovered this engine failed due to water damage. It was the cheap $1 shaft seal Kitchenaid used that really failed, not the motor. Water has entered through the seal and has shorted out the motor windings. It could be a case of very poor engineering or planned obsolescence, you decide. There's a reason the new Kitchenaid dishwashers stopped using a motorized lower arm and went back to one that's powered by water pressure. But after replacing the engine and using a quality oil seal, everything was back to normal.
