My deck was old, gray and ugly. I didn't want to sand and repaint until it was "like new," which seemed incredible, and certainly the rustic look suited my cabin's aesthetic. I used a belt sander for my project, you can see in the before photo that it was lightly sanded, but I sanded just enough to show some of the red grain, which goes very quickly. I like the result very much. The mahogany grain is RED again and looks aged and rustic. Okay, the back steps aren't pictured, I didn't sand them. I don't recommend this, the contrast afforded by the sanding is really worth it for looking deliberate and rustic instead of just looking old and shabby. The smell is natural and pleasant in my opinion. BUT
