Inside they really work

Synology servers are good machines except for a few parts for home use. One of those overlooked details has to do with the device's ambient noise level, specifically fan and hard drive bay noise. The hum of a loud fan in my home theater rack completely overshadows these faintly audible details that can make or break an experience, the latter being applied here. Since there is no administrative setting to fine-tune the fan speed, the only option left is to switch the fan to a quieter option. Noctua fans are known for their unobtrusive performance, but the biggest challenge is maintaining enough volume to maintain the right internal temperature. My 5-bay Synology uses two 80mm fans, so small changes in air volume caused a slight temperature rise [+1 degree C]. . Noctura delivers slightly less noise than standard Synology fans at the lowest fan speed, and if you're considering a similar application, be aware that your results may vary. Excessive heat is a leading cause of component failure *period*, so when choosing replacement fans with noise reduction, make sure you make the smart choice: stay quiet and cool. Take your core temperature before and after to make sure you don't just have a built-in impending doom. Incidentally, drive noise can be eliminated with self-adhesive felt [or soft Velcro] cut to the width of the slot at the top and bottom of the drive bays.
